The Nature of Evil

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Ephesians 6:12

Evil happens, in one form or another, to everyone. Unfortunately this includes the just, as well as the wicked. Evil has no preference and any discrimination is the result of deliverance through the words and actions of mankind.

Evil is described as that which is morally corrupt and destructive. Throughout many religious doctrines, evil is associated with demons and Satan, or one of the many other names attributed to the devil.

The following will offer some insight into the nature of evil, and of the goodness which seeks to oppose it.

Although evil must attach itself to some medium for the purpose of being made manifest, it has the insidious ability to act independently. This means it does not require delivery through someone to directly influence or affect a person. It is a force that behaves like an opportunist.

Evil is a type of power, albeit a consuming one, that makes itself readily available to anyone who decides to either use it or be used by it. It offers itself under the false pretense that it will benefit or appease the person it is tempting. (Make no mistake about it, any benefits incurred by the using of evil are short-lived and tenuous at best, catastrophic at worst. There are no benefits, only the appearance of such.)

Goodness is also a powerful force. It too has the ability to act independently. Unlike evil, however, goodness does not seek to act as an opportunist. Instead, goodness presents itself as an opportunity. Therefore goodness, unlike evil, does not use us with malicious intent, should we decide to employ it. On the contrary, using goodness can only result in more goodness.

The nature of goodness is a power that humanity can access to rise above evil. We may not be able to rid the world of evil, but by tapping into the power of goodness we can help to minimize it. Goodness also acts as a powerful foundation upon which humanity can repair, and in some cases even restore, what evil has destroyed.

We have the ability to destroy evil when humanity works together for good. This power becomes evident in the face of tragedy. Good is an awesome power to behold when we work together to put it into action. Why humanity waits for tragedy to occur, before exercising this power as a whole, is simply beyond the scope of reason.

With conscious forethought we could harness goodness on an ongoing basis, employing it in our everyday lives. We have, as mentioned, proven this fact repeatedly when faced with tragedy. It is now up to us to recognize that every day is sacred. When we take the time to stop and think before moving to action, we can use the powerful force of goodness to continually build upon the aforementioned foundations of good, while simultaneously dismantling the walls that evil encourages.
